World's First Slurry-Bed Coal Tar Hydrogenation Project Was Successfully Tested In China 04 Jul 2018

On June 19, 2018, after overcoming a number of technical difficulties, Yulin Coal Chemical Company's 1 million tons/year coal tar hydrogenation project (Phase I) unit has recently opened the entire process to produce qualified products, marking the world's first slurry-bed whole fraction of high temperature, high pressure coal tar hydrogenation project was successfully tested.

As one of the advanced heavy oil hydrogenation processes that have been industrially verified, the slurry-bed whole fraction of high temperature, high pressure coal tar hydrogenation technology solves the process defects in the process of coal tar processing, realizes the value-added utilization of heavy coal tar resources, and its industrial application has broad prospects, opening up a new path in the development of petrochemical and coal chemical industry, and achieving a major technological breakthrough in the light weighting of heavy coal tar.

Yulin Coal Chemical Company's 1 million tons/year coal tar hydrogenation project uses advanced hydrogenation technology to replace coal resources with coal tar to produce high quality naphtha and diesel. During the test run, the technicians of Yulin Coal Chemical Company conquered a number of technical problems. After nearly half a month of project trials, the test plan was completed ahead of schedule. At present, the project has successfully produced qualified products and can produce 110,000 tons of naphtha and 370,000 tons of diesel per year.

The project is located in Jinjie Industrial Park, Shenmu City, covering an area of 1,500 acre, with a total investment of 7 billion yuan. It is currently the largest coal tar hydrogenation project in China. The project adopts the “VCC Slurry Bed Hydrogenation Technology” of KBR Company of the United States. As the world's first slurry-bed whole fraction of high temperature, high pressure coal tar hydrogenation technology, many process, technology and equipment problems were overcome in the process of engineering design, project construction, single machine debugging, and whole system linkage test, and the conversion rate of raw material oil reached over 98%. The core process technology and valuable operating experience of the VCC slurry bed coal tar hydrogenation project have been achieved, and a new heavy oil hydrogenation process route has been opened up.
