An announcement from China National Energy Administration shows China's new added coal production capacity was 194 million tons in 2018.
According to the data, as of the end of December 2018, 3373 coal mines with  production capacity of 3.53 billion tons/year in China have complete certificates including safety production licenses.
In addition, since 2019, China National Energy Administration and National Development and Reform Commission have approved 20 coal mine projects with a total capacity of 129.7 million tons/year. In terms of the number of coal mines, the number of coal mines normally produced in 2018 has decreased by 534 compared with 2017. Compared with 2017, the number of coal mines under construction has decreased by 146. The 13th Five-Year Plan for the development of the coal industry has set a clear goal. By 2020, China's coal production will reach 3.9 billion tons.
The coal production structure was further optimized. The number of coal mines is controlled at around 6,000, and the output of large coal mines of 1.2 million tons/year or more accounts for more than 80%, and the output of small coal mines of 300,000 tons/year or less accounts for less than 10%.
Coal production and development are further concentrated in large coal bases, and the output of large coal bases accounts for more than 95%. The concentration of the coal industry has further increased. The number of coal companies should be less than 3,000, and the output of large enterprises of over 50 million tons accounts for more than 60%. This can also be seen in the coal mine projects which is approved by the China National Energy Administration ,also approved by National Development and Reform Commission.
